Do You Need Supplements? A Coach’s Honest Guide

Walk into any supplement store and you’ll find hundreds of products promising faster results, more muscle, and better performance. Almost none of them are the reason people succeed or fail with their training. Here’s the honest version of what actually matters.

The Truth: Supplements Are the Last 5%, Not the First 50%

Supplements exist to supplement a solid foundation — consistent training, adequate protein, enough sleep, and real whole foods. If those pieces aren’t in place, no supplement will make up the difference. If they are in place, a small handful of supplements can offer a real, modest benefit.

Supplements Worth Considering

  • Protein powder — a convenient way to hit your protein target, not a requirement, especially useful on busy days
  • Creatine monohydrate — one of the most well-researched supplements available, supporting strength and power output
  • Vitamin D — many adults are deficient, particularly with limited sun exposure, and it supports bone health and overall function
  • A basic multivitamin — reasonable insurance for gaps in a busy, imperfect diet

Supplements That Are Mostly Hype

  • Fat burners — rarely produce meaningful results beyond what caffeine and consistency already provide
  • BCAAs — largely unnecessary if you’re already eating enough total protein
  • “Testosterone boosters” — most have little to no meaningful evidence behind their claims
  • Detox teas and cleanses — your liver and kidneys already do this job; these products mostly just add cost

How to Decide What’s Right for You

Start with your training, your protein intake, and your sleep. Once those are consistent, a well-researched supplement like creatine or a protein powder can offer a genuine, if modest, edge. Anything promising dramatic results on its own is a red flag, not a shortcut.
